Vikings 5th Round Draft Pick Cameron Smith Talks About His Time at USC and What Being Drafted Means
Former USC Linebacker Cameron Smith was drafted in the 5th round as the 162nd pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.
“It’s a big accomplishment and it’s a great feeling but there’s a long way to go.” Smith said when asked what being drafted meant to him.
Coming out of high school, Smith was a four star recruit. He attended Granite Bay High School in Granite Bay, California. He was recruited to USC as an inside linebacker.
As a freshman at USC, he was a Freshman All American and was named Pac 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year.
“My freshman year, I looked up to Sua Cravens a lot. He’s one of the best football players I have ever played with and tried to learn as much as I could from him.” Smith said when asked who he looked up to as a role model while at USC.
Sua Cravens is a defensive back was a second round draft pick of the Washington Redskins in the 2016 NFL Draft.He is now with the Denver Broncos.
In Smith’s sophomore season, he led the team with 83 tackles and was named to the All Pac-12 Second-Team. As a junior, he led the team with 112 tackles and was named to the All Pac-12 First-Team. In his senior season, he was a team captain but he was limited to nine games due to injury. But he still led the team with 81 tackles and was named to the All Pac-12 Second-Team.
“USC and Coach Helton did a lot for me and taught me a ton about playing football and how to be a better football player as well as a better man.” Smith said about what USC had done for him.
Although Smith’s injury forced him to sit out of three games this past season, he is not having anymore problems with his hamstrings.
“My hamstring is not an issue. I have worked really hard to rehab and get back and feel stronger in that area,” Smith said.
To get ready for his draft workouts, Smith trained at Proactive Sports Performance in Orange County, California.
Smith was able to show his talents to NFL scouts at both the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine and the USC Pro Day.
Although Smith did not workout for the Vikings before the draft, they were able to watch him at the combine and pro day.
On 247 Sports prediction for the 2019 Vikings roster, Smith is listed as the second inside linebacker to make the team. Not only does he have a great chance of making the team, but he could earn a lot playing time as well.
